Made for beach parties, making out, and dancing
I spent a few hot, idle summers hanging out at the Chevron Station in Atascadero. My boyfriend worked there, and I would drive up and park my car, then spend hours loitering around listening to punk rock on the boom box. I must have eaten something like a zillion free Slim Jims. I can't even look at them now. At one point, I got too lazy to unwrap them, so I would just bite into the whole, vaccum-wrapped meat product and spit out the plastic. Isn't it weird the stuff you remember?
Friends would inevitably cruise by and there would be a shared cigarette and maybe some dirty jokes. If it was a real hoppin' night, we'd drive by the In-N-Out and see if we could get on some tray-surfing, which required standing on an In-N-Out tray while hanging out the car window. Those were the days.
That's what this rock n roll song is about. That, and ho-hos.
This is just a taste of what's cookin'
This is one of five tracks on Gidget's Revenge, Hayley and the Crushers' first EP. I'm proud of the album's rawness and realness. It feels alive and brings me back to those nights of teenage heat. We recorded the album at Certain Sparks Studio with the talented Randall Sena with me on Guitar, Dr. Reid Cain on bass and the amazing Max Triplett on drums. It was recorded live on a super hot, sweaty day. There was a pack of ho-hos in the studio, for good luck. Thanks to everyone who helped put this together - it is a rag-tag team that I am proud to call my friends.
Album release and new shows!
The Gidget's Revenge album release is happening Fri. March 25 at Bill's Place for the Dance Craze as part of The Ideal's Rides of March event. I'll also be playing the Lost State Records Showcase this Feb. 24 at Frog and Peach in San Luis Obispo. Everything will be available for downloading on band camp after the 24th. My tapes look super cool thanks to Trey Hanawalt of Lost State and thanks Neal Breton for handcrafting such a wicked cool logo!
